Official ESA website for Shrub Mapping-project has been opened

Satellio started cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) last summer after winning ESA’s international tender.

The official project website for Shrub mapping-project has  been now opened after having a successful Progress Meeting with the ESA representatives in January.

In the project, Satellio studies the utilisation of satellite data for the defining the need for the forest management duties in young coniferous forest. The first phase of the project has two significant perspectives to define the  technology’s capability and the business opportunities for the technology.

“The first step in the project will take about a year, after which we will go into commercial piloting with the customers”, says Satellio’s CEO Joni Norppa.

Cooperation with ESA has been a particularly good experience and we believe that it will bring us benefits in the future for example through internationalisation.  We got a very strong representation from the forest sector, research and international vision in the project.

In the project the VTT (leading Nordic research and technology company) and OTSO (Finnish forestry company) are working as a subcontractors. “I really see that as a fresh startup company, we have had a privilege of having such partners involved”, says Norppa. In addition, the project also has the management team of two companies Tornator Plc (leading company in sustainable forestry in Europe) and Pöyry Plc (global consulting company). All these companies help us to better understand the playfield we’re in and give insights to the forestry markets.

We see the co-operation between ESA and the consortium very close and we believe the project will bring significant economic and operational benefits to forest growth in the future. ”
